Cooling Your Home Efficiently and Affordably

On those sweltering days of summer, air conditioners provide cooling relief by taking heat from inside your home and moving it outside. In the process, they remove humidity from the air so you feel even cooler. New technology has made today's air conditioners quieter, more reliable and more efficient than ever before.

A quality air conditioner is a critical element in the Circle of Comfort. Although short compared to other parts of the country, Michigan summers can push the limits of old or inferior cooling systems. The hot temperatures and oppressive humidity can make your life uncomfortable and miserable.

Selecting the right air conditioning unit to cool your home is vital. Bryant air conditioners are built to save you money and and the environment. Each AC unit uses environmentally friendly Puron® refrigerant to reduce emissions and increase efficiency.

At Haley Mechanical, we can help you make an educated decision about the size and rating of your choice. If you have any questions or would like one of our Comfort Consultants contact you, please call us at 734-424-9170 or drop us an email. We will get back with you right away.

Understanding SEER Ratings

C
ooling efficiency for air conditioners and heat pumps is indicated by a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating, which tells you how efficiently the unit uses electricity. Heat pumps also have heating efficiency ratings, indicated as an HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor). In general, the higher the SEER or HSPF rating, the less electricity the unit will use to cool (or heat) your home.

Beginning in January of 2006, the federal government has mandated that all air conditioners have a minimum of a 13 SEER rating. Some units go as high as a 17 SEER rating. Living in Michigan, a 13 SEER rating more than enough to cool your home. To learn more about this change.

Usually, the higher the efficiency, the more expensive the unit. Warmer climates will see cost of a high-efficiency air conditioner or heat pump paid back (through lower utility bills) in a few short years. Michigan home owners will experience a longer pay back because of the short cooling season.

Haley Mechanical can use cooling data from the Michigan area to help you determine about how long it would take you to recover the additional cost in energy savings. Of course, after the payback, you continue to save on your energy bills for the life of the system.

One other point to keep in mind is that your air conditioner is a "split system," which means that there is an outdoor unit (condenser) and an indoor unit (coil). If you're replacing an existing system, both units should be replaced to make sure your new condensing unit gives you optimal performance, efficiency and comfort.

Helping Protect the Environment

The refrigerant used in most home comfort systems; Freon*-22, will soon be phased out by federal law. When a refrigerant is phased out, the cost of servicing products using that refrigerant rises dramatically.

Haley Mechanical is the key to helping you avoid the rising costs associated with Freon-22. He'll analyze your home comfort needs and recommend the Puron® system that makes sense for you.

Puron refrigerant replaces Freon-22 with proven efficiency and comfort. Very soon, you will be faced with a decision about your comfort. As the costs associated Freon-22 rise and supplies of the refrigerant are reduced, you will need to either continue servicing your current system, or you can improve your home's comfort and energy efficiency with Bryant products using the environmentally sound Puron refrigerant.

Puron is the long-term solution for environmentally sound heating and cooling. And, it's a refrigerant we've been using quite successfully in homes like yours since 1996.

Geothermal Cooling Systems

The earth absorbs almost 50% of all solar energy and remains a nearly constant temperature of 50°F to 70°F depending on geographic location. Working with an underground loop system, a Bryant geothermal unit utilizes this constant temperature to exchange energy between your home and the earth as needed for heating and cooling.

In winter, water circulating inside a sealed loop absorbs heat from the earth and carries it to the unit. Here it is compressed to a higher temperature and sent as warm air to your indoor system for distribution throughout your home.

In the summer, the system reverses and expels heat from your home to the cooler earth via the loop system. This heat exchange process is not only natural, but is a truly ingenious and highly efficient way to create a comfortable climate in your home.

This is the best news . . . with the installation of a geothermal unit, your monthly utility bills will be lowered dramatically, leaving more savings for your family.

You can get heating, central air conditioning, and domestic hot water. That’s three benefits – all from the same compact unit. A typical homeowner can save in the range of $600 to $1,200 annually (actual savings may vary depending on usage, weather, and local utility rates).

How? The use of geothermal loops allow our units to use only a relatively small amount of electricity. The unit merely, transfers heat to and from the earth, rather than creating it from fossil sources like conventional systems.

With geothermal, you will enjoy savings up to 60% over conventional systems with a short investment payback.
